Clinical Roundtable Series
Brain Plasticity, Experience and the Development of Motivation and Skills for Eating
October 8, 2009 at 6 - 8 pm
Ackerman Institute for the Family 149 East 78th Street (Library)
What you can expect:
Experiences associated with eating and swallowing in infants and young children are composed of a complex array of sensations and social interactions. The nature of these experiences determines both the course of development of eating and swallowing skills and the child’s patterns of participation in eating situations. Learning at these young ages is optimized by the plasticity of the developing brain. In this session we will discuss the physiological events and social interactions that the infant may experience during this sensitive period for the development of eating skills, how these experiences may shape behaviors, motivation and skills for eating and how we may facilitate learning in the older child.
Participants will be better able to:
- Identify the skills and motivations that shape eating from sucking to independent self-feeding.
- Understand the interaction between eating skills and motivations for eating
- Implement strategies for mitigating aversive events and facilitating desired skills and behaviors
